What should I do with my horse's cut?

Our new horse was just put with our other horses. At the beginning, our lead horse wasn't very nice to him, but then we rode them together and they were friendly, so my dad put them in the same pasture, all together. When I called the horses up for dinner, my new horse had 2 medium sized cuts on his leg. One was curved and pretty thin, on the inside of his left leg. The other was on the back of his right leg, and was pretty good sized. They were both bleeding a small amount, and were pretty red. We put some salve on it, and he kept lifting up his leg. Do you think our lead horse might have kicked him? And is there anything else we can do to treat it?
