Is my girlfriend's request a little distasteful?

My girlfriend has asked me for a pearl necklace to 'make things more interesting' (a statement I find somewhat puzzling). I find her request odd, as to my mind they are not really the type of jewellery young women wear, and she's usually quite fashionable. Should I just give her one? Whom is the best supplier?
